How many pounds of crab legs should I prepare for 3 people?
Q. First time preparing crab legs at home. Any suggestions would be appreciated, especially how much to prepare, how to prepare, and what to serve with it.
Asked by Michele L - Tue Aug 22 16:22:16 2006 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. YUMMMO, what time is dinner? Just kidding, it is more simple than you think, just buy the legs already cooked or buy them fresh and boli with basil and onion and carrots, then serve. Also serve with potatos and rice, delicious together, corn on the cobb is also a good favorite. If you really want details, email me and I will be glad to help you...

How can I tell the difference between imitation crab meat and the real stuff?
Q. I hope this authentic Vietnamese restaurant uses real crab meat and not the "crab-flavored white fish" crab meat...
Asked by Danielle - Sun Aug 24 09:56:39 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Ask them. Visually real crab meat is different than imitation crab. Imitation crab is usually colored red and real crab meat will probably not be red. It will be flaky, almost like tuna, whereas imitation crab is spongy and rubbery. Real crab meat also tastes saltier, with hints of seaweed. You can tell it came out of the ocean. Imitation crab is usually quite sweet.

How do you care for a molting halloween crab?
Q. I want information on the Malaysian mangrove crab known as the Halloween or Blue Moon Crab. i do not want to know about hermit crabs. I seem to be having a lot of difficulty finding any information on the care of crabs other than hermit or red claw crabs online. A. I see you're getting a lot of advice about pulling up the crabgrass by hand. This might sound like about as much fun as a tour of Dante's vision of hell, but consider this: The crabgrass is so-named because it has a sort of crab-like shape: a bunch of arms radiating out from a central spot. And that means if you pull out the central structure, you've got the whole thing. Here's what I do: The day before your attack on the c/g, water the area where they've taken root heavily. Let the water soak in overnight. Next morning, tug at some of the c/g and see how easily they come up. If they pull right out, keep going -you'll be done faster than you think. Several may put up a fight. OK, pass by them and get the others. As you do this, you'll… [cont.]

A. Um, hermit crabs are not reptiles ... Anyhow, you're doing the right thing, having a variety of shells so the crab can choose a new one. I don't know what else to do except wait.

How do you prepare king crab legs?
Q. I'm planning to make filet mignon and crab legs for my boyfriend on Valentine's day and have never attempted crab before. I just bought 3 pre-cooked jumbo king crab legs that are about 17" long each. The butcher's preferred method was steaming them, but they are so long I don't know how I would do that. Is it ok to cut them into shorter pieces? Also, any suggestions on how to serve them?
Asked by KDiddy - Tue Jan 31 17:18:04 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Steaming them is a possiblilty, the thing i don't like about steaming them is that they seem watery and not as firm. My favorite way is to heat your oven to 375, cut the shell of the legs, use cooking scissors, all the way down the middle (length wise) (it's ok if you penetrate the meat a little) wrap both ends of the legs with tin foil (so the end meat doesn't dry out) and bake for 10-12 minutes. I think this makes the meat more firm and thus have a better texture to it. Remember they are already cooked so all you are trying to accomplish is heating them up. ENJOY!!!

How do you get rid of crab grass?
Q. My yard started out with nice green grass, but over the years it has become overtaken with crab grass. Is there a way to get rid of the crab grass so that the good grass can grow again? And how cam I protect my grass from turning into crab grass? What is crab grass? Is it a weed?
Asked by Cupcake - Fri Apr 21 15:53:08 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. All Season makes a lawn food plus crabgrass eliminator. I believe that if it is truly crabgrass, it is an annual and there by controlled by a pre-emergent. However, there are many weed grasses. Some are perennial and controlled with a different herbicide. I would recommend you take a clump into a reputable garden center or a college extension and have it identified.

How much does an average hermit crab eat in a week?
Q. I feed my hermit crab whenever her shell is empty, but shje never eats more then 1 pellet every 3 days. Normally she only eats one a week. Each pellet is about the size of a fine sharpie marker. Is this normal for her to eat so little? Please see my 3 other questions about hermit crabs.
Asked by I NCIS! - Fri Aug 14 14:53:22 2009 - - 3 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Yes, it is normal. When I had hermit crabs about a year ago, they would eat about that much, as well. I was able to find some hermit crab "cookie" or treats for them that they seemed to really like and eat more often. Maybe you need to try other foods for your hermit crab? They can eat fruits and vegetables, that I know. But when I would feed that to my crabs, they would barely even touch it. You could always give it a shot. Just remember, you'd need to throw away the left overs after a couple hours, since the fruits and vegetables will start to get gross and yucky.

I wouldn't say that any one species lives the longest, though I've heard that some have lived to be 30 years old. As long as you take good care of them, they'll live pretty long. Asked by JWilridge - Sat Feb 2 18:42:35 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What kind of crab are you planning to serve? Are you wanting a feast, or are you looking to have many other dishes and just want some crab legs as part of it all? For a feast, look at around 2-3lbs of crab legs per person, or around the same amount for a couple if you're serving other entrees. If you're planning on serving king crab, it can vary from 1/2 to 2/3 lbs per leg, so maybe you can use that to gauge how much you were thinking of serving. Happy eating!

A. None. I made the same mistake and bought two for my daughter as pets for her dorm . There is a reason they ship them in soap dishes and alone at that.My daughter had them in a large 40 gallon breeder tank made to resemble the natural setting . And still within the week the one crab noticed ,attacked and killed the second crab as well as the smaller hermit crabs in the which were devoured the weeks prior. More than enough room for both of them. I would say no . Unless you are going to to put it in with a coconut crab .and that would have to be a very large one

A. Open the cooked crab on the underside by pulling the apron away and removing the top shell where the apron was attached. With a paring knife, remove the lungs and innards and discard. Rinse the remainder lightly with cold water. Break the body into two sections. With the knive, cut each section in half lengthwise. Remove the meat.

True crabs are decapod crustaceans of the infraorder Brachyura, which typically have a very short projecting "tail" (Greek: βραχύς / brachys = short, οὐρά / οura = tail), or where the reduced abdomen is entirely hidden under the thorax. Many other animals with similar names – such as hermit crabs, king crabs, porcelain crabs, horseshoe crabs and crab lice – are not true crabs.
